Making the Kyoot Scene

Finally done! Lots of detail and time went into making the cakes and it turned out to be quite a bit of fun despite my right arm wanting to go numb on me. I think I have a pinched nerve or something in my elbow. :\ Anyway! This is yet another print for the soon to be updated art section of the shop! I imagine this is the reason why Landlord has been so grumpy lately…she thinks she’s always getting the short end of the stick. If you are curious, here are what each of the different cake layers are:

Momo’s Cake (from the bottom):
Strawberry drizzle over chocolate cookie crumbles and thin chocolate cake base topped with chocolate mousse, whipped cream, strawberry mousse, and another layer of whipped cream. Decorated with a chocolate Momocheet statue, chocolate drizzle and mini strawberries.

Fat’s Cake (from bottom):
Yellow cake base topped with lemon drizzle and lemon pie filling, followed by whipped cream, a layer of dark chocolate and then a layer of lemon cheese cake followed by whipped cream and topped with lemon icing blooms, chocolate drizzle and a chocolate Fat Cat statue.

Evil Landlord’s Cake (from bottom):
Short cake base topped with a layer of melted chocolate, followed by a layer of white chocolate mousse covered strawberries, a layer of strawberry drizzle and whipped cream. Topped with strawberry icing blooms, chocolate drizzle and a chocolate Evil Landlord statue.

The cake pillars are vanilla filled chocolate pirouette like cookies.

This is a WIP shot from an illustration I’m working on right now. I really liked Momo’s part of the piece and decided to put her on her own for a progress shot/teaser. I’ve got a few changes to make still, but am having a really good time figuring out how to turn her into chocolate. This whole idea started out as a rough sketch in my sketchbook. Usually I take the rough and scan it and work from there, but I didn’t this time. It’s probably good in the way that my rough reads more like a recipe for layer cakes as opposed to a design scheme.

I dunno…I just sat on my bed last night and turned my ipod on (quite loud actually) and started going with it. When there’s a lot of stress flying around I tend to take refuge in playing there. I’ve got quite a few personal illustration ideas bubbling away too which I really want to get to. And then there’s my new manga idea that’s really exciting…it’s almost bizarre too because the concept is so solid in my mind that I’d swear I’d read it somewhere before. But I can’t find a thing on it anywhere. Even all of my domains are open. Maybe that just means it’s meant to be? Anyway. Back to work.

I suppose if you travel a lot something has to go wrong sometime, right? Standard law of probability? Well, that time was Mini Megacon this past weekend. In retrospect, things could’ve been much much worse…the hotel could have actually burned down instead of being the victim of a massive set of pranks. But it’s still annoying as hell. Anyway. So it’s after 12 Saturday night/Sunday morning and I’m getting ready to go to bed. Suddenly this high pitched keening siren goes off in the hotel room. Kendra and I look at each other and at first don’t realize what it is…then it suddenly dawns on us. It’s the fire alarm! Oh joy. I look out in the hallway and sure enough, other hotel guests are in different levels of disarray peering out of their rooms and looking for someone to tell them it’s a joke and to go back to bed. Then people started to scurry around and others  were running down the exit stairs, so we determined it was not a joke and that we should probably go too. It later amused Kendra how calmly I turned and packed my laptop and backpack. She was grabbing things and chucking them in her bag and I was taking stock of my luggage and grading it from most important to least. I think I was ready to go out the door before her too.

So we go out and immediately see a guy running through the parking lot with a sheet wrapped around him. Hahaha!! But not really. It would really suck to be him, and if I hadn’t decided to skip my shower and do it in the morning, I would’ve been in the same boat but also dripping wet. We walked around and decided to leave our stuff in the car and go see if anyone knew what was going on. We heard many people say “It Was Real!!!!!” and that the 5th floor was full of smoke. At this point somewhere around 5-8 fire trucks were pulling up along with paramedics and fire engine support. We walked around the building and looked in all the windows to see any signs of a fire on the 5th. Nothing to see. We did see someone on the 6th floor though…that turned out to be someone’s 90 year old grandmother/mother who couldn’t walk to get out of the hotel. The person with her had just apparently left her there when the fire alarm went off. Real nice. The paramedics got her out and she was ok, though.

An hour wears on and we wander back around to the side of the hotel where the Kyoot mobile is parked. People are taking pictures of the cars along one side. Hmm. That’s weird. What’s going on? We had moved our car from that row to give the firemen easier access to some pumps on the side of the hotel earlier. We found out that someone had keyed the entire row of cars facing the hotel. They had literally walked along and dragged a key over the back of 8-9 cars. I went over immediately to check the back of ours and sure enough — someone had keyed the back hatch and there was a line going across Cupcake to the other side. Thankfully it didn’t cut deep enough to get the paint below…it only cut the top laminate and second layer and in some spots down to the white base. We’re getting it fixed and you can’t see it unless you’re standing right there, but it’s still really crappy. I’m assuming it was a bunch of kids or drunks…they actually drew on some people’s cars and really messed them up. So we did get lucky in that only one panel needs to be replaced and they didn’t decide to draw on multiple spots on the car or the glass. After that the news circulated that it was not in fact a fire, but someone had unloaded an entire fire extinguisher on the 5th floor. Great. They let people back in and I got to sleep some where after 2AM. It was a fun night.

Other than that, mini Megacon was a fun weekend. It was just a 2-day convention this time. I got a picture of Happi Paper sitting on R2D2. I also came up with the start of what could be a really fun new manga. I’ll have to do it in my spare time though as it’ll be very loosely connected to BeKyoot. I’m really excited about the storyline and characters. I’ve got a lot of details to iron out though. I’m hoping I’ll be able to grab some domains and get the comic setup relatively quickly.  *^_^* So yeah…this weekend was an adventure and I wish I could’ve slept a few more hours this morning. Maybe running at the park or a nice dinner will perk me up? I hope so..

Have an awesome Friday!!

I liked the All Fruit print and idea so much that I decided to continue it out a bit and put each cheetah on her own print. I was originally going to have Fat be a lemon (because she kinda is… ) but on giving it more thought I concluded  the orange fits her better. Oranges can be tart or sweet…depending on the season, which is the way with Fat. A lime fits the Lord in more ways than one…green is the color of money which she loves most. Plus she’s often snarky and sour…but in the right circumstances (like in a mojito) can be very nice. An apple fits Mo quite well…she’s cute, round and sweet. There’s some crunch and crisp to her personality and the bright red reflects her passion for protecting her own backside when she hears a loud noise she doesn’t like.

New poster/print/illustration! *^__^* This was inspired by the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. One of my favorites. I’m not sure that Landlord appreciates being shoved into a lime suit, but she’ll get over it. I plan to have this available as an oversized print soon! This along with Ichigo Mo, and a few others will be the first offerings for the new prints section.

My wrist is about dead, but I’m back into Illustrator anyway. I can’t seem to get enough…I’m going to do individual fruit portraits for each cat too. *^__^* It should be quite fun!

I finished Kitchen Princess!! Maybe that’s the inspiration behind all of my food related posts recently? I’m working on a proper review and will post it soon. Hopefully tomorrow.

Ugh. I’ve got a lot of website work going on…the main site as well as the shop. I’m turning the shop over to a completely new and hopefully much better system (ie one that won’t cause me to have a temper tantrum every time I decide to change up the front page. ) And the main site is going to go through a major content face lift. This weekend is Mini-Megacon in Orlando so hopefully that will be fun and fruitful! Kendra and I will be thundering in on Friday and will hopefully be set up so we don’t have to get up early Saturday morning. Lots to do before then!

Today I have a brand new Momocheet illustration to share! Kawaii Ichigo Momo! She is sunning herself on a giant chocolate chip cookie surrounded by strawberries, pudding and chocolate and strawberry mousse! Lucky little rat tail. I’m really happy with how this turned out…even though it made me REALLY hungry for chocolate while I was making it. I think I had the most fun making the strawberries and then figuring out how to make the chocolate chip cookie.
